I had done Leadership Development Program from one of the Elite Institutes of Mumbai as my first I.T. employer wanted me to complete it successfully.
Very first day we were asked to do blood donation, preferably in government hospital and get certificate as proof of blood donation. People who were weak or not eligible for blood donation due to some health problem were asked to convince some other person for blood donation and get his/her certificate of blood donation and letter from the donor that he/she has done it on person's behalf.
This was supposed to be done within a week.
I went for my first blood donation in my life and it was a very good experience. The nurses and other staff in the hospital blood bank were very good and welcoming.
I got certificate for blood donation. Also they gave me donor's card by showing which I could get a certain number of bottles of blood free in case of an emergency.
I passed my Diploma in Leadership from that institute successfully with a medal for Best Speech(by Audience Poll), a cup for Successful completion of a Project, and a coin for winning debate.
After almost one-one and half year after this I joined a new job and was working with one of the reputed computer institutes as a faculty, teaching few programming languages and databases.
One day I got call from my boss, asking if I can donate blood for one of our student's father. I rushed immediately to the hospital; but the needed blood was AB-, the rarest one. My blood group was different.
I waited there for quite long time so that just in case I can donate my blood and the person in need of blood can get blood of his blood group in exchange. But it didn't work.
I had my blood donor's card. I left it there with the patient's family so that they can utilize it just in case and left for my job.
After almost a month, I was helping my students with practicals in computer lab. Meanwhile, an old man came there. He was looking at me with smile on his face. I could vaguely recognize him. But I was unable to recollect who he was. This person came straight to me and almost touched my feet, I moved back holding him with my hands with surprise and embarrassment as all of my students were watching; a person of my dad's age was about to touch my feet. I asked him, “Why are you doing this? I can't recollect, but I guess we know each other.”
The old man said with tears in his eyes, “Sir, Thank You very much, I am alive today because you left your blood donation card with my relatives almost a month back. Because of your card, I received blood from Government Hospitals' Blood bank and doctors could perform operation on me, which was successful and I am healthy again.”
By that time, almost all of staff from our institute was there and everybody was looking at me with proud, along with my boss. This old man had brought a packet full of different sweets as a token of gratitude and affection for me which, he insisted, I must accept.
I had to. Everybody present there congratulated me for the good work I had done. And we all enjoyed the sweets brought by the old man.
That day onward I donate blood at least once in a year.
Do donate your blood it's really is a great thing to do.
Try it and let's see.........
